  • With these numbers, it is clear to see why email administrators are having trouble keeping up with the onslaught, and end-users are spending increasingly more valuable time deleting spam from their corporate mailboxes.

The MXtreme Intercept Engine - A Blended Approach

The MXtreme Intercept engine provides a set of proven anti-spam filters to maximize its spam fighting power. MXtreme’s language-independent content and spam-scanning capabilities are currently used by more than 30 million mailboxes worldwide.

MXtreme anti-spam MXtreme’s built in spam filters catch up to 99% of all spam that passes through corporate email servers and provides remarkably low ratios 1 in 1 million of false positives. These dramatic results are achieved by using a blended approach, combining objective and subjective filtering technology.

Heuristics - MXtreme has the ability to capture messages as spam based on characteristics about the message itself. This is done through heuristics, which look for email message traits that indicate that a message may be spam. Heuristics include reverse DNS lookups, forged headers, mail flooding and other characteristics. Heuristics allow spam to be captured without relying on filtering the message itself. This provides an efficient yet effective way to catch spam.

End User Quarantine & Trusted Sender Lists - Build employee confidence in the system and improve the experience for the end user. Users can build their own ’address book’ of trusted senders which will ensure messages from marked senders are not tagged as spam. Additionally, spam can be redirected to end user spam quarantine folders.

MXtreme anti-spam plug-in for Microsoft® Exchange - Seamlessly integrate with an organization’s existing Exchange environment to provide integrated quarantining and end user functionality without any administration. This removes the need to manage user accounts, logins and storage for third party quarantine servers by taking advantage of existing Microsoft services.

Rich Disposition Options - Messages tagged by Intercept™’s anti-spam filters can be handled in a variety of ways: administrators can block or delete messages, modify subject headers, add X-headers, send messages to an end user quarantine, or provide any combination of these actions.

Symantec Brightmail Option - MXtreme’s Intercept Engine can integrate seamlessly with Symantec Brightmail to deliver an added layer of anti-spam protection.

    A Blended Anti-Spam Approach

MXtreme combines a variety of objective & subjective filters with local reputation services, sender authentication and global reputation (BorderWare Security Network) to accurately block spam & phishing attacks.

Objective filters - With MXtreme, all inbound email messages go through a set of objective filters, including blacklist/whitelist, RBL, SPF for anti-fraud and anti-phishing, DCC for bulk email, specific access patterns, and pattern-based message filters. Users can build their own personalized whitelists and manage their own quarantine areas.

Subjective filters - The integrity of each message is then verified utilizing the high-performance Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) and mail firewall in MXtreme. Once a scan is completed the content is passed through subjective filters - including Statistical Token Analysis for "Smart" lexical analysis and other local content filters.

Local IP Reputation - Many spammers and attackers do not send mail from legitimate mail sources. MXtreme inspects the incoming IP address and decides whether the IP address is valid or not based on the incoming connection’s behaviour.

BorderWare Security Network (BSN) - The BSN helps to identify spam by reporting behavior information about the sender of a mail message, including their overall reputation, whether the sender is a dial-up, and whether the sender appears to be virus-infected or sends large amounts of spam messages. This is based on information collected from customer MXtreme e-mail servers and global DNS Block Lists. This information can be used by MXtreme to either reject the message immediately or contribute to the Intercept score.

Spam Dictionaries - Pre-defined spam dictionaries containing known spam words and phrases are included with MXtreme to help eliminate the need to initially train MXtreme systems. By providing spam default dictionaries, MXtreme systems can provide strong spam protection after installation without any additional configuration.
